Exciting news for food lovers in Dundee! Mohammed Mohiuddin, the owner of Maisha restaurant in St Andrews, is set to open a new world buffet at City Quay. The City Quay Halal World Buffet and Live Seafood is expected to welcome guests by mid-March.
The new restaurant will take over the space formerly occupied by the City Harbour Chinese buffet, which closed its doors several years ago. Patrons can look forward to a diverse menu featuring homemade dishes from Indian, Italian, Chinese, Mediterranean, Thai, Arabic, and European cuisines.
One standout feature of the buffet will be a specialty “live seafood corner,” where diners can select their choice of lobster and crab from water tanks. Mohammed shared his inspiration for this idea: “I got the idea from Turkey when I visited a riverside restaurant that brought out a trolley with live fish, crab, and lobster. I thought it was fantastic, allowing people to choose their seafood and how they’d like it cooked—fried or grilled.”
The restaurant is currently undergoing renovations and will have the capacity to seat over 300 guests while employing approximately 20 staff members. Mohammed also hopes to add an outdoor seating area and BBQ space, pending permission.
City Quay Halal World Buffet will serve breakfast from 9 AM to 11:30 AM, lunch from 12 PM to 4 PM, and dinner from 4:30 PM to 9 PM. The pricing is set to be affordable, with breakfast costing £7.95, lunch at £12.95, and dinner priced at £19.95.
With over 20 years of experience in the hospitality sector, Mohammed is committed to providing mouthwatering homemade food that evokes the warmth of home cooking. “I want it to be like what a mother would make,” he said. He plans to utilize local produce, sourcing fish from Arbroath and vegetables from the surrounding area. Breakfast offerings will include tea and filter coffee, along with complimentary Karak Chai (black tea with milk and spices) throughout the day.
This new venture comes on the heels of other exciting developments in the area, including plans for Hot World Cuisine to open in the former Arnold Clark showroom on East Dock Street, and Glasgow-based Booffi, which is set to take over the former Kinema building in Dunfermline.
Dundee’s food scene is poised for an exciting expansion, and the City Quay Halal World Buffet is sure to be a welcome addition! Stay tuned for more updates as the opening date approaches.
